Component version and revision project

What was the problem ?

The existing part version tracking system was inadequate and inefficient, leading to several challenges in component management and communication with manufacturers and suppliers. The primary issues included

Part Version Tracking Based on Description

Updated data sheets or specs or dimension updates for a component do not need to be defined in the description

Complete Part Number Changes for Updates

Creating entirely new part numbers for each update for the history and evolution of components

Difficulty in Identifying Changes

Manufacturers and suppliers had to review all documentation for a part to identify changes

Limited Search in Salesforce

It made it easier to search via component description without being stuck with Salesforce’s limits

Project Steps

The following steps were taken to address identified issues and improve the efficiency of the part version and revisioning system.

Determine Rules

The rules determine the conditions under which version and revision changes should be made.

Determine Scope

Which components need to be versioned and revised are determined.

Creating a template

Determining the revision and version template.

Establish process

Define procedures for requesting, reviewing, and approving changes to the component.

Achievements

Here are some significant benefits of this project that we achieved

VERSION TRACKING AND IMPROVEMENT

Efficiently tracking and managing the different versions of each component. This allows clear visibility into the development stage of each version, the improvements made, and how it compares to previous versions.

PROCESS OPTIMIZATION

Optimizing version and revision processes to accelerate project development and achieve more efficient project management with fewer errors.

ENHANCED CROSS-TEAM COLLABORATION

Such a project can help foster better collaboration between departments like engineering, quality assurance, and product management. Ensuring that all teams are informed in real-time during updates and changes can be considered a significant achievement.

COST AND TIME SAVINGS

A well-structured version and revision control system can save both resources and time. Updates and improvements on each component can be tested and approved more quickly, resulting in faster delivery to market.
