Bill of Materials
Naming and Numbering Project

What was the problem ?

The BOM Naming and Numbering system was ineffective and inefficient, leading to significant product identification, procurement, and inventory management challenges. The primary issues included

complex methodology

BOM numbers have complex methodology; too long and complicated

Not clear descriptions

The descriptions of the BOMs consisted of incomprehensible abbreviations

Duplicate BOM Names

Since the descriptions of the BOMs were not clear, new BOMs were created for repeated names

BOM Type
problem

BOM type definitions cannot be determined because they are not made with sharp boundaries

Solution

The following steps were taken to address identified issues and improve the efficiency of the part numbering system

BOM Description Standardization

Extensive review of existing BOM descriptions was conducted to identify inconsistencies and ambiguities

Departments Training

Comprehensive training sessions were held to familiarize all relevant departments with the new BOM numbering system and standard procedures

BOM Number Change

A detailed plan for the transition to the new BOM numbering system was created, including timelines, responsibilities, and potential challenges

Salesforce Update

Salesforce database was updated to adapt to the new BOM numbering system and seamless integration with other systems and processes was ensured

Achievements

Here are some significant benefits of this project that we achieved.

Productivity

Standardized BOM structures enable engineers and production teams to quickly find parts or information, while consistent BOM numbering facilitates more effective production planning and helps prevent delays in supply chain processes.

Optimization

A systematic and organized numbering system minimizes manual errors in data entry or the production process, while accurate tracking of parts or components prevents faulty production and excess inventory.

Communication

Presenting BOM data in a single format improves interdepartmental communication between engineering, procurement, and production teams, while also enabling global supply chain management by ensuring that teams in different locations speak the same language.

Sustainability

Easy updatability: The ability to expand the system as new parts and subcomponents are added ensures project sustainability. Flexibility: A standardized structure facilitates easier modifications and accelerates adaptation processes.
